Our Legacy: Built on Determination, Innovation, and Team Spirit
Our story began with an entrepreneurial vision and a drive to serve Ontario’s growing infrastructure needs. From a single terminal in Hamilton to a trusted name in asphalt supply, Canadian Asphalt Industries has built its legacy on innovation, reliability, and the strength of lasting relationships.

Our story didn’t begin with size—it began with bold vision. From a modest operation to a leading independent asphalt provider across North America, Canadian Asphalt Industries’s journey has been one of innovation, leadership, and enduring partnerships.

1989
Founding

Canadian Asphalt Industries (CAI) was founded in Hamilton, Ontario, by Ray Legault. After nearly two decades in the oil and asphalt industry, Ray identified a gap in supply and an opportunity to better serve Ontario’s growing construction market. With strong supplier relationships and an entrepreneurial mindset, he launched CAI with a clear focus on reliability, flexibility, and customer trust — quickly establishing the company as a respected paving asphalt supplier across the province.

1990s
Building Credibility

CAI earned its reputation through major infrastructure projects, including a three-year contract on the Queen Elizabeth Way. Delivering on these large-scale commitments positioned the company as a reliable partner for Ontario’s growing road network.

2000s
Growth and Leadership
By the 2000s, CAI had become a well-established player in the Ontario market, recognized for its reliability, strong customer relationships, and growing operational expertise. Founder Ray Legault remained actively involved in the company until 2014, helping guide CAI through a period of steady growth and organizational development.

In 2009, Bruce Armstrong joined CAI as General Manager, contributing to the company’s continued evolution and operational strengthening. He helped reinforce internal systems, support customer relationships, and guide the organization through a new phase of long-term growth and stability.
2004–2010
Expansion in Hamilton

Under François Raymond’s leadership, CAI invested in people, expertise, and infrastructure. A state-of-the-art laboratory, built in 2006, became one of the best in the industry, providing rapid testing and certification. CAI also expanded into roofing asphalt, reinforcing its role as a versatile supplier.

2010
A New Era

In 2010, Guy Bélanger became Plant Director, bringing strong operational expertise that reinforced CAI’s culture of teamwork, safety, and stability. He guided the plant through key technical investments, including expanded polymer blending capacity to support major U.S. clients, while preserving the family-like spirit that kept employees engaged and loyal.

2010s to Today
Integration, Innovation, and Commitment
In 2016, Canadian Asphalt Industries became part of the Bitumar family, opening a new chapter of growth, collaboration, and long-term investment. Building on its strong foundation in Ontario, CAI continued to strengthen its operational capabilities, technical expertise, and customer partnerships across Canadian and U.S. markets.

In 2023, another important milestone was reached with the appointment of Louis Gabanna as President. With a formidable track record among major players in the industry, Louis brings fresh vision and extensive expertise to CAI. His leadership combines an innovative perspective with a deep respect for the company’s legacy, positioning Canadian Asphalt Industries for continued success in the years ahead.
The Future
A Strong and Positive Outlook

With a solid foundation built on expertise, innovation, and trusted relationships, Canadian Asphalt Industries remains well positioned for the years ahead. By investing in technology, maintaining operational excellence, and nurturing its people-first culture, CAI continues to support the development of durable infrastructure across Ontario and beyond.
